Schools and Studies:
Born in Berne I visited here the schools which I finished with the Matura Typus C at the Städtisches Gymnasium Bern-Kirchenfeld.
From 1962-1971 I studied at the University of Berne Geography, Geology, History and History of Art (especially History of Architecture) and graduated with a diploma of teacher (College level) and a diploma of Geography. To increase my knowledge I stayed also in this time a semester at the University of Kiel (Germany) and another semester at the University of Zurich.
1976 I finished my thesis (Dr. phil. nat., Ph.D.) at the University of Berne (History of Glaciers in the Little Ice Age, Prof. Dr. B. Messerli).
1990 after a long time of research, which was also twice (1982/83; 1985/86) supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), I presented my habilitation (PD) at the University of Berne (History of Glaciers in the Alps in the LIA).
2006 I was awarded Professor at the University of Berne.
Employment:
From 1972-2005 I was teaching Geography and History at the Städtisches Wirtschaftsgymnasium Bern-Neufeld (State College, Dept. of Economics).
Since 1987/1990 I am working as a regular lecturer and supervisor (diplomas and Ph.D thesis) at the Institute of Geography at the University of Berne (since 2005 full-time).
Research and Projects:
The important part of my research is concentrated on the history of glaciers, their perception, climate and landscapes, especially in the Alps during the Little Ice Age in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. H. Wanner (University of Berne, Klimet and NCCR Climate) and Dr. H. Holzhauser (Dendrochronology, since 1984).
An actual project (supported by the SNSF and sponsoring S. U. Nussbaumer and Dr. D. Steiner) is focussing on the LIA glacier history and the climate in the Alps (refined in Western-, Central- and Eastern Alps) and Scandinavia and opened a cooperation with Prof. Dr. A. Nesje (University of Bergen/Norway) and Prof. Dr. W. Haeberli (University of Zurich).
For a better understanding of this complex topic I got the privilege to visit several outstanding areas e.g. Himalaya, Tibet and especially the Arctic (Alaska, Greenland, Svalbard, North Pole).
Another part of my interests is the Urban Geography, especially architecture, history, public space and perception in Megacities and New Towns in Western Europe and the Asian-Pacific Area and here mainly India with Chandigarh (designed by Le Corbusier).
In this domain I am more a teacher and a supervisor, this in cooperation with Prof. Dr. H.-R. Egli and Prof. Dr. D. Wastl-Walter (University of Berne). Recent topics of diplomas were e.g. Unbuilt Open Space in Chandigarh New Capital City; Block-ribbon-buildings as a model for new residential settlements – Actual perception and future perspectives of an urban quarter grid; Gardencities as an alternative? – A qualitative survey of Gardencity-settlements in England and Switzerland; English New Towns revisited – Between conceptual actuality and planning historical past.
