Aufgewachsen auf einem Bauernhof in Dänemark und ausgebildet im Großbritannien und Australien, treibt mich die Neugierde auf lokales Umweltwissen und die daraus resultierenden gesellschaftlichen Bewältigungskapazitäten an. Meine Arbeit stützt sich auf zwei Jahrzehnte sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung, mit Fallstudien in Australien, Nordamerika, Europa und Afrika.

Meine Forschung konzentriert sich auf die sozialen Dimensionen von Katastrophen, insbesondere auf die Fähigkeit der Menschen, mit Waldbränden zurechtzukommen. Dabei werden breitere Zusammenhänge wie kulturelle Normen, politische Agenden, Klimawandel und Umweltgeschichte berücksichtigt.

Nach meiner Promotion arbeitete ich von 2007 bis 2020 als Sozialwissenschaftlerin an der Universität Wollongong, Australien. Danach zog ich in die Schweiz, um von 2020 bis 2023 als Senior Researcher am Center for Security Studies an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule (ETH Zürich) zu arbeiten.

Im August 2023 trat ich eine vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds finanzierte fünfjährige Forschungsprofessur an der Universität Bern an, die sich auf die Stärkung der Widerstandsfähigkeit von Gemeinschaften gegenüber Waldbränden in Europa konzentriert.

Indem ich Naturgefahren mit der Human- und Sozialgeographie in Dialog bringe, habe ich internationale Anerkennung als bahnbrechender Katastrophenforscher gewonnen. Als Autorin von zwei Büchern und mehr als hundert weiteren Publikationen, sowie mit umfangreicher Erfahrung in der Forschung, in öffentlichen Vorträgen und in der Lehre zeigt meine Erfolgsbilanz ein langjähriges Engagement für qualitative Forschung, die tiefgreifend, angewandt, kooperativ und interdisziplinär ist.
